FAQ

Common questions

Trial, plans & billing

Do I need a card to start the trial?

No. The 14-day free trial starts without a card — add one only when you decide to keep going.

What happens when the trial ends?

billed pauses — it never holds your data hostage. The app goes read-only and you'll see the plan choice, with your full data backup sitting right underneath it: every CSV export and all your receipts, downloadable at any time. You can't create or send until you subscribe, but nothing is deleted and nothing is locked away.

What do I get on the trial?

Everything on this page. There's no cut-down trial version — you're using the same billed a subscriber uses.

What currency am I charged in?

billed for Android is on Google Play, and Google shows the price in your local currency — including any tax that applies — before you confirm.

How do I cancel?

From your account settings — billed opens the Stripe billing portal, where you can cancel in a couple of taps. No phone calls, no retention hoops.

Installing & devices

Is this a real app, or just a shortcut?

A real one. billed is a progressive web app, so once it's installed it runs in its own window with its own icon, keeps a local copy of your data, and behaves like anything else on your device. On Android there's a Play version too.

Is billed in the App Store or Google Play?

Yes, on Google Play — billed is there for Android. There's no iPhone app yet: on iPhone, iPad, Mac and Windows you install it straight from your browser in about twenty seconds, and it opens by its own icon like any other app. Either way your data stays on the device, so you can still see it when you're offline — changes save when you're back online.

Do I have to install it?

No. billed runs perfectly well in a normal browser tab at app.billed.au. Installing just makes it quicker to get to and gives you the full screen.

Can I install it on more than one device?

Yes, as many as you like — phone, tablet, laptop, desktop. Your data lives in the cloud, so it's the same billed everywhere and you sign in with the same account.

Does it work without internet?

Partly, and it's worth being clear about which part. You can open billed and view or export your data with no connection — you'll see an "Offline — working from local copy" badge. Creating and editing need to be online, because saves go straight to the cloud.

How do I remove it?

The same way as any app. Press and hold the icon on a phone and choose delete or uninstall; on a desktop, remove it from your apps list or Dock. Nothing happens to your account or your data — sign back in from any browser and it's all there.

What devices does it work on?

Any modern browser — phone, tablet or desktop. Install it to your home screen or dock and it opens like a native app. Offline you can still open it and view or export your data, though saving changes needs a connection.

Your data

Can I import my data from my old system?

Yes. Upload the CSV exports from your old system — most invoicing apps will do — and billed matches the columns for you, with a chance to fix any that don’t line up. Clients, quotes, invoices, expenses, time entries, products and services, and equipment all come across — your full history, current and previous tax years included.

I’ve never used an invoicing app — how do I get my clients in?

You can always add clients one at a time. To fill your list faster, billed has a smart import built for exactly this: paste a rough list of names, an email signature or notes off your phone, or add a photo, screenshot or PDF like a business card. It reads them into a review grid for you to check and edit — nothing saves until you confirm, and it skips anyone already in your list.

Can I export my data?

Yes, anytime — your clients, invoices, expenses, time entries and receipts. Even after you cancel, your data is yours to take.

Getting paid & where it works

How do my clients pay me?

Put your bank transfer details on the invoice, add a Pay with PayPal link with the amount already filled in, or both. You mark the invoice paid once the money lands.

Is it only for the UK?

No. It's built for the way you work here — VAT when you're registered, the April tax year, miles instead of kilometres — but it isn't UK-only. Set your country and billed adapts the tax, currency and tax year to match: the UK, Australia, New Zealand, the US, Canada, Portugal, Spain and Germany are all covered, with the interface in English, Portuguese, Spanish or German.

Mileage log

Do I still use Google Maps to drive?

Yes, and that's the idea. You set the trip up in billed — start, stops, destination — and billed gives you the route to open in Google Maps. It navigates, billed remembers. You're not learning a new maps app.

Do I have to start from my business address?

No. It's pre-filled because that's the common case, but you can set off from anywhere — a supplier, a previous job, home. Change the starting point and billed measures from there.

Does it track my trips automatically with GPS?

No, and deliberately so. You type the addresses; nothing runs in the background, nothing follows you around, and nothing sits there eating your battery. It takes about as long as typing a destination into maps, because that is what you're doing.

Can I set my own cap and rate?

Both live in Settings and both are yours. The per-mile rate arrives with a number already in it, but billed never changes it behind your back — so if you'd rather use your own charge-out rate, just type it in. The cap can be switched off entirely.

Where do the miles actually come from?

The Google Maps API. Address search behaves the way you'd expect because it's the same service, and the distance follows the driving route rather than a straight line or a guess from billed.

I forgot to log a drive. Can I add it after?

Yes — that's what the mileage log screen is for. Add the trip directly, set the date to whenever it happened, and it counts towards the year like any other. Charging it to an invoice is the one thing that needs the trip attached to a booking, since the booking is what raises the invoice.

Can I edit a trip after it's saved — say I took a detour?

Yes. Open any saved trip from the mileage log and edit the addresses, stops or date. If the drive didn't follow the route billed first mapped — a detour, a closed road — adjust it and billed re-measures the miles to match the route you actually took.

Can I get it out for my accountant?

Choose a tax year and export the mileage log as a PDF. Everything else in billed exports to CSV as well, free, even if you're not subscribed.
